What Is Intermittent Fasting And How It Works?

By: Nimba - October 16, 2021

Intermittent fasting is an eating pattern where you cycle between periods of eating and fasting. It does not specify which foods to eat but recommends when to eat. There are several intermittent fasting methods, each of which divides the day or week into eating and fasting window.

The premise of intermittent fasting is simple: when our insulin levels fall far enough, as they do during a fasting period, we can burn fat. In simple words, when a person does not consume food, insulin levels fall, and fats begin to burn.

Holistic medicine is a healing method that focuses on the whole person rather than just treating a specific health condition. So, the connection between intermittent fasting and holistic healing is the detoxification of waste in your body before any other disease sets up its home in the body.

The goal of a holistic cleanse is to clean out the digestive tract whereas the goal of a holistic detox is to eliminate toxins throughout the body by converting them to waste, thereby enhancing detoxification pathways of the body, particularly in the liver.

Holistic healing & detoxification therapy relates to intermittent fasting:

  • Holistic treatments included in a customized Detoxification plan stimulate the body, which combines fasting and intermittent fasting.
  •  Intermittent fasting is becoming more popular for weight loss and disease control.

 Types of intermittent fasting:

1. The 16/8 method:

It entails fasting for approximately 16 hours per day and limiting your daily eating window to approx. 8 hours.

2. The 5:2 diet

The 5:2 diet entails eating what you usually eat, 5 days a week and restricting your calorie intake to 500–600 for the other two days.

3. Eat Stop Eat Method:

Eat Stop Eat consists of a 24-hour fast once or twice a week. Fasting, from dinner of one day to dinner of the next day, equals a 24-hour fast.

4. Alternate-day fasting:

You fast every other day when you practice alternate-day fasting. There are several variations on this method, and some of them allow only 500 calories per day during fasting days.

5. The Warrior Diet:

The Warrior Diet entails eating small amounts of raw fruits and vegetables during the day and one large meal at night. In simple terms, you fast during the day and feast at night within a 4-hour eating window.
